Over the last decades, wine production has reached a standstill in terms of improvement of organoleptic properties and wine elaboration methods, and is instead promoting the standardisation of flavours and tastes and perpetuing a unique winemaking method. As consequence, the leadership of European wines is being questioned by emerging producers like USA or China. The European wine industry needs thus to differentiate -while maintaining wine quality- to stay afloat in this competitive market.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the technical, commercial and financial viability of Æternum, identifying the necessary development actions to take the final product to market readiness and confirming our project’s potentiality to bring innovation into one of the most traditional and ancient markets ever.

During this feasibility study we carried out a technical, financial and commercial analysis of Æternum. A detailed technical plan for completing the development of Æternum design and manufacturing the prototypes for the testing phase was carried out, together with the identification of the appropriate components manufacturers and service suppliers. Our patent search and FTO analysis confirmed that our project is based on novel processes and technologies and we have freedom to commercialise Æternum worldwide. After analysing the global wine market we concluded that there is a considerable opportunity for the commercial success of innovations improving wine quality and sustainability in our main target markets (Germany, China, USA, Switzerland). The financial projections elaborated confirmed that the project is viable from a financial point of view as the initial investment will be paid back in 3 years with cumulative profits over 5 years of over €9.6 million.
Æternum will be the only wine making process able to increase wine shelf life by 30 to 40 years, by prolonging ageing inside the bottle. The resulting wine will offer unparalleled assortment of flavours and aromas, and increased nutritional properties in an innovative container. With this project Bodegas Langa will disrupt the traditional wine market, showing a great marketing advantage for wine distributors and sellers.
We expect a turnover growth of 1351% during the first 5 years of commercialisation and contribute with 10 new employees to the EU economy.
