Chemistry and microphysics of Contrail formation

Cel

The chemistry and microphysics of contrail formation of modern turbojet aircraft engines will be studied using a combined approach of experiments and model calculations.
The detailed objectives of this proposal are
- To improve the mechanism of pollutant formation in both the engine nozle andthe jet regime of the plume with particular emphasis on those componentsthat are involved in contrail formation (SOx, HOX, NOy and soot)
- To characterize the chemical and microphysical properties of aircraft enginesoot particles after emission and during ageing under simulated plumeconditions.
- To refine existing unmerical codes treating homogeneous and heterogeneousnucleation by including non-equilibrium effects and soot activation kinetics.
The proposal is suggested to be carried out in three different work packages
- WP1: Modelling of HOx, NOX and SOx chemistry in gas turbine and nozle regionmeasurements.
- WP2: Physical and chemical characterization of engine emitted sootparticles.
- WP3: Modelling of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleaction.
The participants of this project originate from both the experimental (engine emisssion and laboratory studies) and modelling (chemistry and microphysics) community with extended individual expertises. It is therefore expected that CHEMICON will be conducted successfully and that its results contribute to an improved understanding of contrail formation.
