To develop modules for an outline framework for a bridge management system. To achieve this a number of particular objectives have been identified, each of which addresses one of the modules required for a bridge management system. These are as follows:
- to develop methods and produce guidelines for the numerical evaluation of defects in concrete structures and to develop research software for the categorisation of deteriorated concrete members using neural networks;
- to derive general guidelines based on current knowledge for the assessment of the load carrying capacity of bridges;
- to produce recommendations for the modelling of deterioration in the assessment of bridge carrying capacity;
- to consolidate and improve existing knowledge on the modelling and monitoring of chloride penetration in concrete;
- to develop the basis for a decision making system on whether to repair, strengthen or replace a bridge;
- to develop the methods and provide guidelines for prioritisation of maintenance options.
The final objective will be to examine how the various modules could be drawn together to form an outline framework for a bridge management system.

To-date eight bridges on the Norwegian coast north of Bergen have been selected for trials. Further demonstration sites and case studies will be selected.

The following projects have been noted as undertaking work that is relevant to BRIME: BRITE/EURAM P3091. This is concerned with the development of a system (IQOA) for determining the condition of a bridge. RIMES - An OECD project to develop a Road Management System including bridges. WAVE (Weighing-in-Motion of Axles and Vehicles for Europe) DIVINE (Dynamic Interaction of Vehicles and Infrastructure Experiment).
