In line with the European Science Foundation (ESF) Plan (1998-2001), the ESF Standing Committee for the Physical and Engineering Sciences (PESC) has launched a call for proposals for ESF scientific programmes preferably related to the domains of chemistry and engineering sciences. Proposals from other areas may also be considered depending on their quality.

The proposals should aim at networking approaches on challenging R&D topics related to the following:

- Chemical and physical systems at extreme scales and conditions;
- Novel materials systems and complex molecules;
- Complex systems with non-linear and stochastic behaviour;
- Complex technical systems and technologies;
- Advanced computing methods and systems.
