OLIVE: a database for good laboratory practice
The European validation for biomedical testing methods unit (EVAM) is inviting tenders for work on 'OLIVE' an on-line in vitro toxicology ECVAM database system for good laboratory practice (GLP). ECVAM is part of the Joint Research Centre's Institute for health and consumer protection. It is responsible for coordinating the validation of alternative testing methods at the EU level. Few general and harmonised regulations exist for in vitro practices, However, a well-regulated code of practice of laboratory conduct is needed in the in-vitro field (cells and tissue culture work), which often deals with unknown parameters and several types of living tissues. Indeed, the lack of familiarity of regulatory authorities with in vitro methods has often inhibited the submission of such data to authorities, says ECVAM. This call for tenders relates to the need to establish a database system providing the minimum requirements for the day to day running of a GLP compliant laboratory, including topics not covered by the OECD's GLP guidelines, but which are deemed essential for an in vitro laboratory.
