The EU Education Council approved a recommendation on mobility for students and teachers on 28 May. The recommendation invites Member States to take specific measures such as the removal of legal and administrative obstacles for mobility, the encouragement of language learning and the development of arrangements for financial support. 'It is good news indeed that we during the Swedish Presidency have succeeded in approving a recommendation on mobility for students and teachers. It represents an important step for the EU, but is even more important for the students and the teachers in Europe,' said Thomas Östros, chair of the Education Council. The Council adopted a resolution on eLearning based on a presentation of the Commission's 'eLearning Action Plan', influenced by the Swedish initiative on IT in schools, the IT IS project. The EU Education Ministers discussed the implications of the conclusions of the Stockholm European Council in March 2001 for the education and training sector and considered how work should progress leading up to the Barcelona European Council in March 2002. The Swedish Presidency announced that the theme of the European Conference of Education Ministers in Riga on 28 to 30 June 2001 will be 'eLearn for life'.
