Landslide hazard zoning innovations

Landslides, including debris flow and rock fall, are a familiar hazard in mountain areas, regularly causing loss of life and property. Therefore, hazard assessment is increasingly required in land use planning.

There were previously no standard techniques with which technical administrators, land planners or insurance companies could assess debris flow and rock fall hazard or to predict its occurrence and magnitude. Thus, innovative, user-friendly debris flow impact models were developed to help determine basic zoning principles in terms of guidelines, codes, and standards of practice. One of the ways this has been implemented is through a GIS (Geographic Information System) that captures, stores, analyses and displays data related to the position of the earth's surface. The results of the data are then disseminated to end-users via training courses and workshops as well as direct involvement in model applications and access to relevant information on the web. Provided that no potential political or legal barriers arise, the final adoption of these results could very well have a strong impact on professionals and consultants in land use planning industries resulting in safer conditions for everyone.
