Understanding obesity via progressive measures

Following an extensive study on the diagnosis and treatment of obesity, guidelines have been established. The hope is that their aid will span across industry, health care professionals and consumers for intervention, treatment and prevention of this condition.

Obesity poses a major public health challenge in modern society and can be traced back to a number of causes. Some of them include genetic predisposition, metabolic rate, diet and lifestyle. Since the study showed much individual variation in terms of pinpointing obesity subtypes, the development of a general treatment is not the most suitable. Instead a tailor made treatment founded on increased knowledge about the complexities of obesity appears to be the best measure to create change. Thus the NUGENOB project consortium has explored the options of funding a booklet to respective pharmaceutical, food and healthcare industries as well as to European consumers. By using the knowledge regarding genetic factors, the pharmaceutical industry can test anti-obesity drugs and identify an individual response to the treatment. The food industry can take necessary measures to produce food with more suitable nutritional aspects. By understanding genetic and environmental factors, clinicians and dieticians in the healthcare industry will be able to recommend and implement tailor made realistic treatment for consumers. Finally, the European population may reap the benefits of a healthier future.
