The European Commission has agreed on a general orientation for the labelling of products produced from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The aim is to ensure a coherent approach, within the different sectors involved across the EU, to regulation of the use of GMOs in the food chain. On the basis of this orientation, the Commission will bring forward legislative proposals on labelling, which will cover all products placed on the market following safety approval. This will include both "live" GMOs, and products derived from GMOs. The following labels would be used: - Voluntary labelling: "This product does not contain ...", for certified non-GMO produce; - Mandatory labelling: "This contains ...", for produce known to be of GMO origin; - Mandatory labelling: "This may contain ...", in cases where the presence of some material of GMO origin cannot be excluded, for instance following bulk transit, but where no evidence of the presence of GMO material is available.
