EUREKA, the European cooperative research initiative, will be displaying a range of innovative R&D projects in a specially-designed section of the "Pavilion of the Future" at EXPO 98, in Lisbon, Portugal, from 22 May to 30 September 1998.

Tying in with the overall theme of EXPO 98, "The Oceans, a heritage for the future", the EUREKA projects on display will all be linked to ocean research. The exhibition will focus on the importance of ocean research and the fundamental role that technology plays in our ability to observe, study and understand ocean processes on a global scale. It will use the latest technologies to create an exciting and interactive educational experience, casting visitors as observers and explorers of the deep.

The EUREKA rooms will form part of the "Ocean Observatory" exhibition, and will introduce visitors to the tools and technologies used to measure, monitor and predict changes in the ocean and conserve the marine environment for future generations. The EUREKA projects on display will emphasize the benefits of cooperative international research. Examples of the EUREKA projects which will be featured include:

- EUROMAR-APG1: a free-drifting underwater sensor platform which follows the currents performing measurement tasks;
- EUROMAR-MERMAID: an instrument system which measures coastal pollution;
- EUROMAR-BISCUIT: a device for measuring seabed erosion;
- EUROMAR-MURPOS: a new generation of polythene buoys which act as a meteorological and environmental station;
- HYDROSIL: a seismic microphone imaging system;
- EUROMAR-STIRLING-AUV: an unmanned, Stirling-powered mini-submarine for exploring the seabed;
- EUROMAR-CARIOCA: a buoy which measures carbon dioxide levels in the sea;
- ROMAN: a robot which performs heavy jobs at great depths;
- EUROMAR-OPMOD: a computer modelling system which can predict pollution spreading at sea.
