A workshop on "Software intensive systems engineering at the turn of the century - Towards new ways to meet time, cost and quality challenges" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 18-19 September 1997. The workshop is being organized by the European Commission (DG III) within the framework of the specific RTD programme in the field of Information Technologies (ESPRIT).

The objectives of the workshop are:

- To disseminate information about the actual and expected business impact of projects and activities on software intensive systems engineering in ESPRIT;

- To allow participants to exchange users' and suppliers' views, from a business perspective, about the benefits and problems in adopting and developing innovative software-intensive systems engineering technologies in a variety of application domains;

- To identify areas where future R&D and deployment efforts would be needed to meet future business challenges.

The workshop will be organized in three sessions. Each session will be introduced by a few short presentations given by executives and managers of leading-edge companies and focusing on the contribution that relevant technologies are giving, or are expected to give, in terms of cost reduction, shorter time to market, increase of quality and customer satisfaction.

The three sessions are as follows:

- Re-engineering the project life cycle:
The session will be introduced by the experiences of companies in the avionics, telecommunications, professional and consumer electronics domains who are putting in operation new ways of developing software intensive systems, such as adopting more formal methods, establishing a product-line approach to software development or centering on reusable software architectures. The discussion will focus on how similar experiences have been or could be replicated in different and less technology-aware domains, as well as on highlighting both the benefits and risks for different kinds of businesses;

- Meeting the IT challenges of the century:
The session will focus on what we are learning from the two major IT challenges of these years: the Year 2000 problem and the introduction of the single European currency. Starting from the experiences of companies who are exploiting European technology to supply tools and services to their customers, the discussion will touch upon the limitations of software intensive organizations (both users and suppliers) emphasized by these challenges, as well as the opportunities arising from a thorough analysis of the existing IT assets in most companies and from the perception of the need for substantial improvements in their software development process.

- Developing for and with the Internet:
The session will focus on the paradigm shift introduced by a wide adoption of the Internet and of intranets. On one side, the challenges of developing highly-distributed systems, often migrating from centralized architectures of legacy systems, will be discussed, together with their expected and, in some cases, already demonstrated business impact. On the other side, the Internet provides a powerful infrastructure to implement new software intensive enterprises and to make virtual software corporations or the global component market a reality. Pioneering experiences will be reported and will stimulate discussion about the concrete business opportunities and constraints behind the "hype".
