Relative positioning for collision avoidance systems

Cel

An average of 47000 fatalities occur in Europe (EUR 25) per year as a result of road accidents. Many involve crashes where some causing factors could be modified by using Collision Avoidance Technologies. Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS) can be developed using advanced sensor systems and algorithms allowing an accurate localization of the own vehicle and the path prediction of other vehicles. The combination of this with communication systems can make possible to warn drivers of potentially hazardous situations, reducing crash probabilities.

Different CAS technologies (ultrasonic technologies, laser and video, microwave radars) present advantages and satisfactory performance under certain circumstances but disadvantages under others (poor accuracy, unexpected night performance, weather susceptibility). In support to the eSafety initiative for the development, deployment and use of Intelligent Integrated Safety Systems in Europe, REPOSIT aims at demonstrating the feasibility of a new CAS technology: the integration of Relative GPS (RGPS) and wireless vehicle-to-vehicle (v2v) communications with existing CAS.

RGPS is based on advanced positioning algorithms allowing a significant relative positioning accuracy enhancement. RGPS involves using wireless v2v communication for data exchange between vehicles. The performance of these combined technologies is expected to produce an enhancement of the CAS performance. REPOSIT will concentrate on Intersection and Longitudinal Collisions, where most noticeable performance improvements are expected.

For this purpose, REPOSIT will perform a user needs and system specifications analysis and translate them into algorithms and suitable v2v communications models, for test and simulation. Simulation results will be analysed and conclusions obtained. Additionally, in-vehicle integration feasibility analysis, certification procedures and interaction with standardization activities and exploitation of results will take place.
