The main objective of this project was to develop the most disruptive cameras for AR, MR, VR and depth estimation applications for mobile phones, tablets and laptop computers: specifically, an embedded camera module, a highly competitive device aiming towards disruptive market-shares and global leadership.
At the moment of writing this report a camera derived from this project is being sold to a manufacturer of ANDROID tablets and several industrial applications, and we plan to promote it to additional customers (including in Fairs like the CES, the MWC, SPIE-XR,...).
These devices offer much better performance than Structured Light [SL] cameras, LIDARs and TOF [Time of Flight] cameras, as they increase drastically the resolution of the depth map (from 40 Kpixels to 1,45 Mpixels), consuming 7 times less power than the second closest competitor.
Additionally, the costs of the BOM (Bill of Material) for the camera is reduced by more than 50% and provides realtime-3Dvideo and depth maps (vs. a few frames/second of competitors) running under the Snapdragons XR2 and 888 from QUALCOMM.
It reduces the overall size of the device by more than 50%, the power dissipation is ten times lower, enabling to have as a result a more robust camera with enhanced functionalities and longer battery life.
We aim to disrupt into established value-chains of products including the aforementioned type of camera (mobile telephony, tablets and laptops), making camera module manufacturing competitive in Europe (due to the automation introduced by the alignment solution developed in this project)
