Bio-books in an e-library

Research on DNA and RNA is one of the most productive and promising scientific and business fields. Mamit-tRNA is an internet site/portal where information regarding mammalian mitochondrial tRNA has been archived, classified and presented in a comprehensive way.

DNA and RNA are the books of life. These books contain the entire information that describes the unique characteristics of every species and every individual. The capability of de-codifying and reading these books has been achieved in recent years providing humanity with new scientific possibilities. During the biosynthesis process, in every living organism, a number of molecules are activated in order for processes to be completed successfully. Among them tRNA is one of the molecules that plays a key role. The genome of every species is written with the use of 4 basic elements. These elements form sequences that guide the development of every living organism. tRNA consists of similar sequences. Nowadays these sequences can be de-codified making the research on DNA and RNA one of the most promising and productive fields in science and business. New information is being added daily to existing discoveries, making systematic archiving an important issue. Mamit-tRNA is a continuously updated internet site/portal where information regarding mammalian mitochondrial tRNA is been archived and classified. It contains 679 tRNA gene sequences from 31 mammalian mitochondrial genomes, which have been classified into 22 families according to the amino acid specificity as defined by the anticodon triplets. The site provides all the modern internet capabilities such as comprehensive presentation of the information, a search engine and useful links. This site is a very useful tool for those researchers who deal with genetic based diseases in human beings as well as for those working with tRNA structure research. Furthermore the structure and the information provided on the site can serve as an educational tool for bioscience students.
