Translation solutions for the new Internet

The Internet is slowly coming of age. It is no longer enough to simply access information; defining and communicating the digital context in which this information exists is the new challenge facing researchers.

The EU's VICODI project set out to enhance people's understanding of the internet's digital content. The aim was to introduce newly developed contextualisation mechanisms to act as tools towards building a new visualisation environment for the internet. As part of developing these mechanisms a multilanguage approach was employed. In this framework, coping with the variety of different language inputs required a reliable context sensitive translation tool. French-based Systran SA has been involved in Machine Translation (MT) technologies essentially removing human translation services from the process. MT technology integrates numerous functionalities and can cater for a variety of settings. For the VICODI project, Systran developed a new generation MT module for the translation of English into Latvian based on Analysis and Transfer modules. Furthermore, the company enhanced its existing English-French and English-German customisation dictionaries to further strengthen its MT offerings. These new MT modules form part of the tools facilitating the creation of a visual contextualisation, and could eventually lead to a stand-alone management tool. The copyright(s) for the new MT English-Latvian module have already been registered and a prototype is available for further demonstration. There is also much scope for further development in terms of marketing and licensing. The new technologies can find application in a variety of information processing settings in the fields of IT, telecommunications and computer networks.
