Microarray technology to assess extent of genetic disruption

The effect of endocrine disruptors (EDs) on various mammalian tissues and systems is still not clear. Further understanding is essential in order to develop sound protective policies against these environmental contaminants.

The EC-funded GENDISRUPT project studied the genetic effects of EDs on the reproductive system of humans, a prime target for this type of compound. Emphasis was placed on how gene expression was altered in the presence of EDs and how, if at all, the effects on the gonads were passed on to future generations. Project partner, Genetix worked on the development of innovative targeted microarrays to be used for ED assays. These microarrays make use of specific gene sequences in order to investigate the effect of endocrine disruption. By detecting the changes in gene expression, these arrays could form the basis of novel diagnostic products for a range of EDs. A prototype has been prepared and patents have been applied for covering the technology. With the development of these arrays researchers will have the chance to study the effect of EDs on families of genes rather single genes each time.
