A workshop on the use of genetically modified lactic acid bacteria as starters for dairy fermentations will be held in Brussels on 26 September 2000.

The workshop is intended for an audience of representatives from the dairy sector (research, development, manufacture), consumers organisations, and the press (specialised and general). Speakers from the GEMOLAB consortium will present the objectives and achievements of the EC demonstration project GEMOLAB aimed at the development of genetically engineered prototype 'dairy starters', using food-grade methods, for the manufacture of dairy products (buttermilk, yoghurt, Gouda and Swiss-type cheeses) with improved organoleptic properties and process control.

Invited speakers will present the dairy sector's and consumer organisations' points of view concerning the production and consumption of dairy products obtained from genetically modified micro-organisms, and explain the regulatory constraints in this matter. These presentations will be followed by a round-table allowing participants to put questions to a panel of experts including the speakers.

The workshop will close on a standing buffet offering the possibility to continue the discussions informally.
