Monitoring hazardous chemicals in case of accidents on the sea

A European seminar on "Monitoring hazardous chemicals in case of accidents on the sea" will take place in Ispra, Italy, on 9 December 1997. The seminar, which is part of the Joint Research Centre's "Blue Seminars" on aquatic processes and water technology, will be led by Dr. Gerhard Matz of the Hamburg Technical University, Germany.

The seminar will examine the role and operational functions of three "hazardous chemical spill combat vessels" built by the German Ministry of Transport to assist in the event of oil or chemical spills at sea. These ships are equipped with various devices designed to deal with the effects of oil and chemical spills at sea.

Particular safety features of the ships include use of a charcoal air filter system allowing work in hazardous conditions, use of an on-line monitoring GC/MS with membrane extraction and automatic injection into the GC; and the ongoing development of a special sub-sea remotely operated vehicle (ROV) allowing recovery of sunk chemicals for later clean-up.
